Senior Brown Bag

Foodlink distributes over 80,000 pounds per month to approximately 3,000 seniors in need in Sacramento County. The bags are delivered to senior apartment complexes, distribution sites, and agencies who deliver meals to seniors. Each bag contains commodities such as fresh vegetables, fruit, and bread, as well as canned vegetables, canned tuna, soups, tomato sauce, macaroni, and peanut butter.

The Seniors who receive the bags also enjoy a less obvious benefit of the program: the team work and camaraderie it builds and fosters. At the program sites the volunteers, many of whom are also brown bag recipients, help with Foodlink’s monthly deliveries and filling the bags with food. The opportunities for teamwork and friendship are additional benefits that provide seniors with the chance to socialize and a sense of ownership, along with their much needed bags of food.
