SNAP

The Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP (formally known as the Food Stamp Program) helps low-income people and families buy the healthy food they need to live. Participants apply using a state application form to receive these benefits. They are received once a month using a electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card that is similar to an ATM card and can be used at over 175,000 food markets and farmers' markets nationwide.

In February 2010, 39.7 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, received SNAP benefits. This is 22% more than the previous year . To see the most current data on SNAP, click here.
